BMAI’s mission is to support and promote traditional bluegrass music in the State of Iowa through music festivals, music events, and marketing materials. Additionally, BMAI promotes public awareness of its traditional music foundation by educating the public via email, websites, and our yearly band and festival guide. BMAI’s primary service area has been in Southeast Iowa but membership is open to anyone from any state. BMAI currently hosts three events: Iowa Theater Annual Bluegrass Show in Bloomfield, Iowa, Honey Creek Resort Annual Bluegrass Festival in Moravia, Iowa, and Ramada Tropics Resort Bluegrass Festival in Des Moines, Iowa. Members of the organization reside in various locations across the Midwest. Currently BMAI has members from various states including: Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Indiana, Oregon, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Ohio, and Virginia. These members vary in age groups from youth to older adults as well as in gender.
BMAI has recently become a licensed affiliate of the “Play It Forward” instrument lending library program, which was created by the Bluegrass Heritage Foundation. BMAI works with bluegrass musicians and music teachers to foster music literacy and performance skills in deserving young people ages 8- 21 by providing no-cost access to the primary bluegrass instruments such as mandolins, guitars, fiddles, and banjos. As part of the Play It Forward Program, BMAI works with bluegrass clubs and organizations to find musicians and music teachers who are willing to become a bluegrass mentor for those young people who seek to borrow instruments under the program.
